Now, the title of this blog would seem perhaps a bit on the silly side. But think about it. Do you really and truly go to bed happy at night? If not, have you ask yourself why? Are you stuck in some sort of a rut? If you are, have you named your rut? Several years ago I read a book "This Present Darkness," that insisted that we name our demons. Makes sense to me. How about you. If we are ill is it enough to say, "I don't feel well?" Of course not. We say, "I have a cold," or "I have the flu," or some other disease. You don't treat a cancer with an aspirin, but you don't treat the common cold with radiation. You use an appropriate treatment based on the condition. In the same way, why do you go to bed less than happy without asking why? Is it a job that you are stuck in? Break out! You can't do that, you say, because the economy is bad? I'm not suggesting you just quit and do nothing, but I am suggesting there is no good reason to grow old in a job you hate. It's never too late to change a career. No, you may not become a world famous heart doctor at my age, which by the way is 61. But you can do something just as important that helps people. Don't grow old asking, "What if."
Perhaps the rut you are in has to do with a hobby or volunteer activity you have always wanted to pursue but have never taken the time to do. Do it now! Don't put it off. There is an organization that says we have 24 hours in a day by which there are 8 hours for rest and refreshment, 8 hours for our usual vocation and 8 hours for our family and friends. Take the family and, with part of that 8 hours fulfill that dream of yours. You'll be amazed at how much better you'll feel.
If we could all go to bed at night feeling we have done something with our day that has made us happy and has helped another human being it would be amazing at how few people might really need medications to help them sleep. It might surprise you to know that people who go to bed happy are healthier overall.
You will likely have between 25,000 to 30,000 days in your lifespan. Use them wisely. Use them to help someone else, use them to make you happy. God never created humans to be unhappy. We do that all by ourselves. God created you to be happy, "I know the plan I have for you," says the Lord, "plans for welfare and not for evil. Plans to give you a future and a hope." In other words, God's plan is for you to be happy. Now get out of the rut and go do it.
God Bless You and God Bless America
